Catastrophic spring flooding, blistering attacks in the media, and a mysterious disappearance greet Chief Inspector Armand Gamache as he returns to the Sûreté du Québec in A Better Man. If it’s been awhile since you’ve read the 15th book in the series, we invite you to refresh your memory of the novel with our Re-Read led by Kelley Ragland. Is it true? Is it kind? Does it need to be said? This quote reminds us of the Wisdom featured from A Rule Against Murder. What do you think? Let us know in the comments!

A nun taught us this in high school. Before you speak ask yourself 1.Is it true? 2. Is it kind? 3. Is it necessary? She said that what you have to say must be at least TWO of those things. i.e., Something might be untrue, but kind and necessary (“Your baby is adorable.”) Something might be unkind, but true and necessary ( “Your child ran out into the street. She must be supervised.”) Or something might be unnecessary, but true and kind. (“I love the way you sang the National Anthem.”) Most of the time, this rule works pretty well.
We don’t have to say everything we think!
These words need to be tatoo’d on politicians’ (& sadly, some church leaders) arms so they can refer to them before saying anything. A world lived through Gamache’s words would help us all feel at home.
Ma mère disait:”Toute vérité n’est pas bonne à dire…” which is the last part of the quote and, as mentioned before, words to live by.
I love this quote as a good foundation before speaking however, aren’t there times when things just have to be said although unkind? Makes me think perhaps it can be said in a way that is not unkind?
Teach them young these wise words to live by- be kind to one another and remember is it true, is it kind and does it need to be said(repeated).
Muggins is a ham!
A code to live by
You can.t “unsay” things so, these are so important.
Everyone could benefit from this quote….one well-known person comes to mind right now. Knowing when to stay quiet is something I’m always trying to remember….and also think before you speak is a good thing. 🙂
Words to live by💕
What a wonderful world it would be if everyone remembered those 4 words.
Thanks for the hours of good reading and though-filled insights and inspiration. I am a Theologian and use you characters and quotes often. I love All of them but Ruth gives me the permission to tell the truth to people who know what I mean when I say that “ I’m fine” that means help!
I repeat these words everyday, and try to live by them. Thank you Louise Penny .
Reminds me of the old adage. Think before you speak
Why is it that humans hate silence and feel the need to fill the void with talk? Truth, kindness, and good judgement are necessary. A bit of silence before speaking is wise.
Beautiful reminder
Love the reminder of this quote and the debut of Muggins!
Perfect! Muggins was right on cue!
